EWC pleased to announce new venture Paradise Islands Press has been a dream of ours for several years. Hell, we bought a passle of ISBN numbers a while back fully intending to start up our own publishing company. And we're excited to say the first Paradise Islands Press production is ready to roll off the presses. EWC regular David B. Axelrod's latest book of poetry, "How to Apologize," is set for publication in early 2009. For more news about his book and PIP, click here. |
OLD FRIENDS (Menu Favorites) DAVID B. AXELROD As stated above, we're proud to publish a few poems from David's new book, "How to Apologize." David's been with us a long time, appearing in various forms as an English prof at Suffolk Community College, to being published in "Old Friends," an early attempt at a literary magazine published in the Washington, D.C., area in the early 70s, to a contributor to the EWC and host of the EWC's editor's book tour on Long Island in 2004. Among his many accomplishments, David was named Poet Laureate of Suffolk County, L.I., for 2008-2009. Check out his new poems here: ROBERT SAVINO Robert joined us in EWC Vol. III, Issue IV. Well, now this Long Island poet pays us another visit with a few selections from his poetry chapbook, "fireballs of an illuminated scarecrow," to be published by Good Japan Press in December. Check him out here: MICHAEL DE VITO JR. Mike is "The Mic," the legendary host of the Eat write Cafe's Open Mic nights when we ruled such Gate Two Street hangouts as Jack Nasty's, The Jet, and Club Red in Okinawa City. Mike has moved on to another island, Staten Island. We still don't understand why -- there are no palm trees there. Anyway, check him out here: DAVID ALLEN Go ahead, tell me I have a huge ego and have to add a poem or two of my own in every issue of the EWC. It's true. But what chef doesn't like his own cooking the best? Besides, it's the only pay I get for slapping another meal together. Enjoy. |
THIS ISSUE'S MENU We're changing the way we do things here, but we'll be gradual about it so you won't get too confused. Please bear with us, after all, David, our Editor, chief cook and bottle washer never learned how to touch type, let alone figure out what the hell HTML was all about. In this issue we're visiting some Old Friends and welcoming a new poet. |
Our Entre' This issue we're proud to present Matthew Allen, a 24-year-old Hoosier native who found a new home in Okinawa, Japan, and learned the wayward ways of the Eat Write Poets from his father and Michael Devito, the original "Open Mic" of Gate Two Street. Matthew's graduated from the School of Hard Knocks, as his poems attest: |
DESSERTS We also have a few single poem submissions from other old friends, including Barb Reiher-Meyers, Paola Hornbuckle, Jason Miller, and Jordan Krais. Here they are: |
